The Dark Side of College

Primary tabs

Although it must be certainly stated that college does have many benefits that can help catapult a graduate into career stardom, there is also a much darker side of college that is hardly noticed.
College Has A Dark Side

Expensive

College is expensive. Really expensive. It is almost comical as to how much people are willing to pay in order to become educated and possess a college degree. It is not uncommon for students to pay upwards of $20,000 per semester at a quality university. This can easily dip into savings and loans as this type of capital is hard to come by. Does the expense of college pay off? Sometimes, but not always.

Time

College takes time. A masters degree typically takes around 4 years and doctorates can take 6 or more years to complete. 4 years is a lot of time. That is 5-10% of your life. If you are going to commit this amount of time to college you better make sure that it is going to pay off in the future. It would suck to spend this amount of time in school only to realize that it was a complete waste.

Teachers

Some schools have good teachers - great teachers. Others do not. The teachers are a big part of what make or break a school and a class. If you really want to get the most out of college you better hope for some quality teachers that know what they're talking about. Hint: If your teacher was not high enough quality to be actually working in their field and are instead teaching in it you may want to reassess the situation.

Rote

College is rote. What do I mean by that? It is almost the opposite of creative. It lacks that struggle and innovate push that people need. It gives you a very boring and easy road map that hardly will bring you to success in your personal career. Look, if you have all these college graduates all being taught the same things and all going after the same jobs do you really think you're doing anything unique and special by going to college? Is it not the unique people and innovators that really make it in society?

Degree

Degrees are worthless. They really are. The fact of the matter is that it is absolutely impossible to prove competency with a piece of paper. Competency proves competency, not degrees. If you can get up and do the task then you are competent, degree or no degree. We have been led into the false god of degrees thinking that this is the end all savior towards our career woes. Degrees don't do anything. People who hire based off degrees most likely still have not figured this out and are only perpetuating the problem.

Conclusion

These are just a few of the many dark aspects of college. Yes, college does have positive aspects and if approached appropriately can provide stunning results. The problem is, most people don't get stunning results with college. This is because college is too focused on the dark side.
